WordWeb Pro Dictionary App Reviews

12 Customer Reviews:

Considering the price 5 dollars against 30 dollars for other dictionaries, this app is the gem. It has pretty much all the definitions you gonna need. Most dictionariers have around 300 000 so does this one. Wordweb comes with great sentece examples and division for nouns, adjectives and verbs. It is definately one of the best dictionaris on the App Store. And probably the best deal you can make ever.

Friends….. This is not like windows version. In windows version ctrl+right click on a word will lead to the wordweb. It can be used in all the applications like browser, pdf, microsoft office apps, djvu files and all the document type files. But it is not so in mac version. It is a utter waste to buy this in mac version. it is not even equivalent to macs inbuilt dictionary. It is a normal good dictionary where you have to type the word and search. I was expecting it to function as like in Windows version. But I was totally disappointed after buying this. Wordweb is an excellent dictionary for Windows but it is right opposite for Mac. Hope this review would help the interested people.

I couldn;t wait for the Mac version of this great program to make its debut, I have had the windows version for years and use it quite a bit, the Mac version is just as good, very handy when looking for an alternative word to use or even to check if its spelled correctly, thats what I use it mainly for and for the price its offered at, what a steal!

This was one of my favorite apps when I was still on a PC. It was, sadly, left behind when I decided that for my own sanity I needed to get off of Windows. And now, its available for the Mac!! If you solve or compile crosswords or word puzzles, this app is for you. Ive never found anything I liked better. Its small, fast, and usually right on the money. Its definitely less cumbersome than, say, Crossworders Dictionary and Gazetteer. It can also integrate as a service on a Mac so that it can be accessed from any other application. Thanks, Anthony. At last I have WordWed on the Mac!

It

Its WordWeb, so thats always a plus. And five bucks?! Another BIG plus. Finally, someone understands the Laffer curve. However, after using the Windows version for years, there are a few features I expected on this first release. 1) When you highlight a word, then open WordWeb, the highlighted word should be searched and displayed already. 2) When you copy a word, same thing. Its in the buffer, WordWeb should already have it displayed when it opens. 3) Comparing synonyms with the pc version, this version is lacking. Plus, in the PC version you could just click the synonyms tab, or the other tabs (type of, types, etc). Here, its not as straightfoward. You have to scroll down and look for matching symbols. As a writer, I need a good thesaurus. The PC version was good. This version will be good, hopefully. Interesting that the free PC version is better than the paid-for Mac version. In the PC version, you had a taskbar icon, so the program was already loaded in the background. In Mac, you could have the same thing. An icon could be in the top bar, same bar where the date/time, battery life is displayed. Program runs in the background, you click on the icon, whatever word is highlighted or in the buffer, that word is displayed. But overall, Im glad they released this. Beats all heck out of the Mac dictionary.

If you are a word fan then this is a useful addition to your dictionary library. It is a lot faster and cleaner than going to a dictionary website and dealing with all the ads and is available offline (useful if you like to write in non-internet connected places). The biggest reasons to go with WordWeb products over Apples OS X built in offerings are: - pronounciation link: Most words have a speaker icon where you can hear the correct pronunciation. - show types: Many words are cross referenced. Searching flowers gives you a show types with the entire list of flowers. - search: Full Text, Anagrams, Containing Words, Pattern Placeholder (crosswords, hangman, etc) The biggest frustrations: - Apples UI is gorgeous, WordWeb is PC windows like. - Apple will show pcitures and diagrams next to definitions. WordWeb has no pictures or diagrams. - Apple will show one scrollable list of defintion, thesaurus and WikiPedia, WordWeb requires you to click on tabs and it only searches between their installed products. If WordWeb could incorporate Apples dictionary offerings into an improved interface they could combine both ecosystems into one interface, which is what we really want in the first place. If they also offered the ability to add web URL dictionaries it would be perfect!

Im a sucker for dictionaries. In addition to Apples default, I have ODE, SOED, and WordWeb Pro. Although the Oxford dictionaries are particularly useful for more obscure words and for providing additional information, I find WordWeb Pro often has the most useful definition, plus an abundance of other information: synonyms, antonyms, similar words, less specific words, and more specific words. My only complaint, which I make more tongue-in-cheek, is that I can never remember the symbols associated with each. A very useful resource. I love the fact that all of my purchased dictionaries are consolidated into one tool: I find it worthwhile to compare definitions across each of the integrated dictionaries.

WordWeb Macbook version doesnt function in Macbook like it does on PCs. In PC, you can just shortcut key + right click to find word meaning, synonoms and such. WIth this on Mac, you can only use such features on Mac made products like Safari. If you wanted to use it on Firefox, it will not work. Also, its not a quick search, you have to short cut + right click -> move cursor -> click to search word. It was such a waste of money for me to spend $4.99 If this is not goign to function like the PC version, I want my money back.

This is a remarkable application with so much more to offer than the built in dictionary app. The interface is simple and inconspicuous and fits neatly on my desktop next to the application Im working in for easy and quick access. I also bought the Chambers Thesaurus and Dictionary and they both plug into WordWeb for cross referencing. Great to have access to all three under one app. Highly recommended!

awesome simplicity!

I use this word web app almost everyday! This is simply the most useful simple dictionary to use. Always ready at your fingertips. Thanks word web!

After doing a search with a asterisk* at the end and looking through the various definitions in the results it locks up at some random point. So if the patern matching isnt reliable I might as well just look it up at an ordinary dictionary or an online dictionary. .

I was expecting to get the same features that I love with the FREE pc version, so I figured I’d help the guy out and pay for this version. Unfortunately, it does not work like the PC version. I actually use the PC version as a spell checker as well as a dictionary for any selected text, and it works really well. If the spelling is wrong, I know right away because the definition isn’t listed. But then there’s a list called “nearest” that usually highlights the actual word I’m trying to spell. The problems with the Mac version: - No keyboard shortcut to pop it up a the system level (i.e. within any app as well as the OS UI). - If you have a word selected in a text doc, website, app, etc, after launching WordWeb, the selected word is not already loaded. You have to type it in all over again. If you want this type of functionality, don’t bother with this app.

Long time windows users, hugely disapointed.

As a long term user of WordWeb Pro for windows [for almost a decade] I can't believe how useless the Mac version is. There's zero hotkeys—nothing. Not even one to look up the clipboard. I realize the mac version is cheap compared to the PC version, but honestly I feel like this is a sad imitation of the real thing. The built-in mac Dictinary system inis more useful.

My goto app on MacBook & iPhone

Fantastic app for keeping track of all my look ups on all the Apple platforms. The author is very helpful in answering questions directly. May not be the glitziest, but it sure the easiest to use.

Great App - Favorite Dictionary

WordWeb Pro is my favorite Dictionary and is one of my most used apps. Great interface and integration with other apps on my Mac. I also have the Chambers, ChamThes, and Collins dictionaries installed and find the tabs give easy access to the other dictionaries. I can't say enough good things about this app. I love the audio pronunciation features. I have a hearing deficiency and love being able to use the audio to hear how words are supposed to sound like. I can click on the audio repeatedly to learn the proper way to pronounce a word. I bought this many years ago and still get updates for free!

My go to word reference software!

Excellent apps and integration between dictionaries by this devloper! I have both the iOS and Mac versions and I always have one open whenver I writer or revise. My one thing I wish--and this is not a complaint--is for translation apps from this developer.

Love it!!!

I'm an upper intermediate English speaker trying to increase my vocabulary to reach to the level ol C1. This app is a huge time saver with many useful features that enables me to comprehend many synonyms and antonyms at the same time. And it's still being updated, can you believe that! Thank you for this app!

Unable to install it more than one MAC desktop

I was able to perform the insallation in where I purchased it. However, I was unable to install it in another MAC desktop. However, the MAC desktop fullfilled all requirements what this software suggested to be able to run installer. Need some expertise tips here....!!

Really Good and helpful

I used many dictionaries, and finally decided to pay for one because the free dictionary that I have been using for years doesn’t give me detailed English explanation and I cannot see what words above or under the word I am looking for(I couldn’t get a whole view of the dictionary. When you look up a word in a physical dictionary, you can also see other words next to the word you are looking up). This one obvious looks like a dictionary with all the related above and under words showing at the left. Every word has its synonyms, antonyms and derived words. On the above right corner, it tells the types of the words. Anyhow, it looks simple concise but has everything I need. I am happy with it. One suggestion: I cannot set automatic enunciation. I have to click on the button. I wish when I look up a word, it automatically pronounce it. Every app has to try to eliminate the need for action of human’s fingures.

Great content for two decades, now in a fabulous App

These WordWeb dictionaries (pure WordWeb Pro in this case) are basically an exceptional replacement for the built-indictionaries in MacOS. The content is very well organanized, and the interface is up-to-date with the latest improvements in MacOS. As far as content, it does not get any better than Oxford and Chambers. Of course it would be amaziang to have the entire Oxford English Dictionary, but that license is impossible to obtain and would cost $1,000. But for everyday use this is a fantastic set of products. If you have not looked, check out the other offerings by this developer. I have used these WordWeb softwares for 9 years (since 2009) before they were on the App Store. They are truly excellent for writers, academics, and other researchers. Fast, efficient with good content. (I am also putting this review on the other WordWeb App Store products I own, because they really are part of an integrated product.)

STILL no audio

Couldn’t help but notice a more current version 3.5 available here, not long after I’d posted a 2-star review. I of course installed it, albeit with fingers crossed. Don’t get me wrong. As mentioned perviously I've been a WordWeb user for many years on another platform but could never justify the $$ for the little use I made of it there. Once I saw it available on the App Store here I thought it time to do what I could to support Anthony Lewis. I only wish this v3.5 would have functioned the way the dev designed it to. It remains the only, and I mean *only* app I invoke (or website I visit) to be totally without of one of its’ more elegant offerings: hearing the pronunciation of a word in addition to its meaning. I’m on macOS Sierra (10.12), Anthony, with no immediate plans to upgrade to High Sierra. C’mon, I know you can do it!!

Excellent Product

I have Word Web Pro on my iPhone 5S and Mac. The interface is simple and useful. I like the pronunciation. This makes learning and using English easier for me. This product deserves to be even more widely used. I have been using the free version of Word Web on Windows PC for a decade and like it. To make Word Web more powerful, I added the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on the Mac and the Chambers Dictionary and Thesaurus on the iPhone.

Makes writing a joy!

I purchased this a few minutes ago, and immediately was impressed with the clean interface and the fact that all the dictionaries and thesauri are integrated into one interface, making this app an awesome addition to my writing needs. But more than that, I use Scrivener for writing and am constantly trying to find an alternate word, with this app I can put it in a split of the full screen with Srivener on one side using 80% of my screen and this app using 20% and I can simply select and copy a word to the pasteboard and the app automatically updates with the word selected. Huge time saver!!! When I saw that I had to write this review! Thank you!
